Yifan’s paper describing the discovery and structural characterization of a highly specific transporter for the low molecular weight thiol/thione, ergothioneine, in the respiratory pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae, appears online today in Nature Communications!  Congratulations to Yifan, Katie and Katherine!!

Emma McRae, a new Chemistry graduate student in chemical biology, joins the group. Emma completed her undergraduate degree in chemical biology at UC Berkeley, where she carried out undergraduate research with Michael Marletta. Welcome, Emma!

Dr. Yifan Zhang will begin a postdoctoral appointment on December 1 in Prof. Taosheng Chen’s group at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the Department of Chemical Biology & Therapeutics in the Comprehensive Cancer Center there.  Good luck Yifan!

Matthew’s paper connecting transition metal starvation to flux through the queuosine-tRNA biosynthetic pathway in a bacterial pathogen is accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA!  This paper describes fundamental insights on QueD2, a 6-CPH4-synthase and “low-zinc paralog” that becomes cell-abundant under conditions of calprotectin-mediated Zn/Fe restriction in Acinetobacter baumannii.  Congratulations Matthew!

Our paper that describes aspects of the structural, proteomic and metabolic response to hydrogen sulfide stress in the gut bacterium Enterococcus faecalis appears online (open access) in Antioxidants.  Congratulations to Brenna and collaborators José Brito and Federico Issoglio on the structure and dynamical analysis of Ef coenzyme A persulfide reductase!  The “swinging pantothenate arm” re-appears!
